You do it day in and day out – consequently, your go-to workout can put you in a fitness rut.
So what about changing it up a bit with some new moves? Below are 4 steps for creating a fresh routine to put the sizzle back in your workouts.
Look for inspiration
What gets you motivated while (or before) working out?
Look to your interests to inspire you – a movie like “G.I. Jane” can prompt you to add some one-armed push-ups to your routine. Or take out some aggressions on a punching bag Rocky-style. Asking your gym friends for suggestions is also a great way of discovering some new tricks.
Consider time constraints
Whenever you’re creating a new workout, it’s important to consider how much time you have to execute it.
For example, if you typically pump iron on your lunch hour, you may not want to include a lot of exercises that require you to wait for a particularly popular machine. Or if you’re tight on time and know you have to get in and get out in an hour, maybe cut your cardio 10 minutes short and go for some free weights.
Get ideas from Pinterest
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again — Pinterest is an amazing place to find workouts and fitness inspiration. Here are some boards that might help you in your quest to mix-up your workout routine:
- Greatist: 300+ exercises, workout routines, and tips

Establish your primary goal
Whether it’s cardio, strength training, or just burning off steam, build your new workout around the exercises that will accomplish your primary goal.
If you’re looking to cardio for upping your stamina, incorporating more running and jumping makes sense. (Or if you want to get really wild, consider throwing in some dance moves.) But if burning fat is a primary goal, strength training with free weights might make sense.
