The Great South Bay YMCA, located in Bay Shore, NY, serves more than 6,500 members. The South Bay Y offers members an indoor pool, and a state-of-the art health and wellness center for exercisers of all ages.
As a non-profit organization, the Great South Bay Y needed a way to maximize their existing space that could pay for itself through an increase in personal training revenue. Connie McDonaugh, the Great South Bay Y Health and Wellness Director, said, “I was shopping around for functional fitness equipment and was leaning toward the Life Fitness’ Synergy unit, however their piece was not customizable to our space. The Queenax™ system by Precor was fully adaptable and customizable to fit the area we were looking to fill.”
The biggest challenge the Great South Bay YMCA faced was not being ADA compliant and having out-of-date exercise equipment. They also needed something that would fill the functional space without taking up too much room.
The second biggest challenge was increasing revenue to cover the costs of the new equipment. They needed to find a way to retro-fit their space to include products that would allow personal trainers to attract new members.
The Great South Bay Y worked with Precor to develop a solution that would allow them to create a large functional area against the wall. This enabled them to have the flexibility of using the room for group classes, personal training, and for members during down times.
Precor Master Coach, Luis Cornier, held a fun-filled, full day training for the Y staff to introduce them to the Queenax Wall Solutions system. He took the team through the benefits of functional fitness, how to use each of the apps and options, and how to promote the system with current and potential members. “Education and training is ABSOLUTELY necessary. It engaged the trainers, created buzz with members, and it promoted creativity for new ideas and ways to use the applications,” said Connie McDonaugh.
Additionally, their fitness facility was refreshed with Precor Experience™ Series 830 Line cardio equipment—treadmills, ellipticals, and Adaptive Motion Trainers®—and Discovery™ Series strength. Taking their fitness offering to a whole new level.
The Great South Bay Y has implemented several small group training options for its members using Queenax. They host three classes a day and offer a fee-based 8-week program. Personal trainers have incorporated Queenax into their one-on-one sessions and the active aging members are reaping the benefits of functional fitness.
The new design and equipment have revitalized their membership and attracted new members joining the Great South Bay Y.
