How to Recruit Your Gym Staff

Your new gym is becoming a reality, but now you need to fill it with a rock star team so everything runs smoothly. Starting your staffing search can be a bit daunting, which is why we’ve put together these helpful guides you should start with:

Once you have the roles and job descriptions ready, it’s time to take them public to find the right people that will make up a great team. Here are some tips for next steps for recruiting your gym staff.

Word of mouth

The truth is that many jobs are filled via word of mouth – through mutual friends, coworkers and past professional relationships.

So first things first: reach out to your connections to see if they know anyone who might be a good fit to fill a role at your gym. Whether it’s your old coworker who knows the perfect personal trainer who’s just moved to the area or your family friend who knows some great front desk candidates, this can be the easiest way to find qualified candidates.

However, you shouldn’t solely depend on word of mouth. There are two other great ways that will have candidates coming to you.

Fitness-related job boards

Next on your list should be submitting to relevant fitness-related job boards. These job boards are full of fitness professionals looking for career opportunities. And while you should get plenty of candidates, also consider submitting to general job boards like Indeed and Monster just to be safe.

Social media

Don’t forget about social media! Not only can you post your jobs on LinkedIn, but you can also find relevant groups to share your gym’s openings with.

For example, you might find a local group of job seekers, or a broader group of fitness professionals who can pass on the job descriptions to their own connections. Share your openings with them and let others do the groundwork for you. If you have a Twitter account, you also might consider tweeting out your open positions using hashtags like #job and #hiring.

Once you’ve recruited a good amount of qualified candidates, be sure to review these interview tips [link] to make sure you’re getting the most out of each and every candidate you’ll meeting in person.
