Meet the Precor Master Coaches: Tonya Gutch
Meet the Precor Master Coaches: Tonya Gutch
I had the terrific opportunity to grow up as a military kid. Moving all over the United States with my family was an amazing growing and learning experience. Getting the chance to live in places like Chicago, Washington DC, New Orleans, and San Diego exposed me to a lot of our country at a young age. I now call Dallas, Texas, home and still love to travel nationally and internationally.
Continuing with our "Meet the Precor Master Coaches" series, say hello to one of three Master Coaches from the Cooper Fitness Center.
What got you into fitness?
I was introduced to fitness and physical activity at the young age of 4 in my first gymnastics class, and I’ve been hooked ever since! I always knew I would be involved in sports or fitness as a career. A day is not complete unless I’ve had some type of physical activity!

Why did you want to be a Precor Master Coach?
Becoming a Precor Master Coach was an extreme honor! Precor stands for excellence in the fitness industry and is known to always be two steps ahead of everybody else. I wanted to be part of this cutting edge team.
What is your favorite piece of Precor equipment and why?
It’s a tie!
Precor makes the best treadmills hands down. I love to mix it up whether it be walking hills, running fast and flat or sprinting up a mountain. I can do it all on a Precor Treadmill!
The AMTs are so diverse, you can choose your move depending on your mood. Sometimes you want to float in the air and run in the clouds or sometimes you want to crank it out and see if you can hit over 200 strides per minute. Your machine, your mood, your move!
What is your favorite move to do on Queenax equipment?
I fell in love with the Super Functional one leg swing forward into the one legged drop back. It feels extremely beautiful and athletic at the same time.
What’s your favorite personal fitness story or memory?
One of my favorite fitness memories is right after I had won a gold medal for the United States in Sportaerobics. While attending a very fancy cocktail party, Dr. Kenneth Cooper introduced me (as a fitness champion) to former President George W. Bush and fitness pioneer/legend Jack LaLanne. He told them I could do a one leg one arm push up. Well, of course they wanted to see it. So, I kicked off my heels and busted out a one leg one arm push up in a cocktail dress! J
Tell us about a time you were able to help a client reach and/or exceed his or her fitness goals.
Early in my career, I had the honor of training an up-and-coming competitive high school swimmer. She was ready to set the competitive swimming world on fire! One year into our training she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. With her heart, determination and driving spirit, we stayed focused on her dream and kept training through her extensive treatments. She attended almost every meet that competition season. We may not have won first place medals but we won our own personal victories! This girl always had a smile on her face and had that “never give up” attitude. That same year she was nominated to carry the Olympic torch and was selected! She asked me to run the route and help carry the torch. I was so proud!
What’s your favorite fitness mantra?
I have many favorites:
1. Pursue greatness!
2. Eat clean, train dirty!
3. Drink some coffee, put on some gangsta rap and deal with it.
4. Your body can stand almost anything. It’s your mind you have to convince.
5. No one ever regretted a workout.
6. Today I will do what others won’t, so tomorrow I can do what others can’t.
7. If the world knocks you down do a pushup.
What’s your favorite movie (fitness-related or not)?
I’m a sucker for rom-coms! Sleepless in Seattle will always be at the top of my list. I’ve seen it a millions times, but can still sit down with you right now and watch it from beginning to end.
Give us a random fun fact about yourself!
I have a 100-lb Doberman!
