The Wilmington Family YMCA is located in Wilmington, NC. They strive to build strong families, and strong communities through programs and practices that create healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
Their mission is centered on balance, bringing families closer together, and encouraging good health. One of the ways they focus on achieving this is by offering personal training. They want to lead the way in functional fitness and find new and innovative ways to keep their exercise offerings fresh.
In 2015, the Wilmington Family YMCA was forced to close their doors due to a fire and move into a temporary facility. Their temporary home reopened 90 days later and the staff was faced with the challenge of retaining existing members and enticing new members.
This new space was significantly smaller than their original home and they needed to maximize every square foot. Shannon Berg, Director of Operations told us, “I was looking into functional fitness already, and saw and heard a lot about Queenax. I loved how it could be built to fit what works best for your facility.”
Berg partnered with Precor and was one the first facilities to have a Queenax Wall Solutions system installed in the U.S. This allowed them to make a functional space on their wall for group fitness classes, one-on-one Personal Training, and for members to use at any time.
The Wilmington Family YMCA received a full day of training provided by Precor Master Coach, Jeff Groh. He showed the staff how to use the apps and optionals to help their members improve cardio endurance, gain strength, and flexibility. Berg said, “For other facilities who purchase Queenax, investing in training is a necessity. This allows your trainers to know how to utilize the product and in turn engage and excite them. Once they are invested, they are more likely to use it with their clients and find new and fun ways to exercise on it.”
They also had several pieces of the Experience Series 830 Line cardio and Discovery Series Selectorized strength installed. The 830 Line offers exercisers easy-to-use motion controls and an LED-based display that keeps them engaged with essential fitness statistics. The Discovery Series Selectorized Line appeals to a wide variety of exercisers, especially their older members. With its ease of use, bigger placards, and open and inviting design, more members feel confident incorporating the strength pieces in their workout routines.
When the Queenax system was first installed, the Wilmington YMCA held demo days for members to try a free 30-minute workout with a personal trainer. This not only excited the members, but gave the staff an opportunity to get more hands-on experience with Queenax.
Since installing Queenax, they have held 10 classes a week. These 30-minute classes are led by a personal trainer who oversees anywhere from four to six members at a time. The Wilmington Family YMCA charges $5 per class, if paid in advance, and $7 for same-day drop- in. When the Queenax is not in use for classes, it is open to all members. Lori Campbell, Wilmington Family YMCA’s Healthy Living Coordinator, said, “We have people in their 70s using the Wall Solution for cardio and strength, as well as people of all ages who are training for certain sports or just trying to stay in shape. The entire Queenax system is useful for those in rehab, recovering from cancer treatment or injury, the fine-tuned athlete, or moms looking to keep up with a busy lifestyle.”
Additionally, the Wilmington YMCA was featured in an article, “Climb the Walls” for WILMA, Wilmington’s Successful Woman magazine, touting the success of Queenax and functional fitness. To read the full article, click here
