Paul Byrne Announces Retirement as Precor President; Rob Barker Named as Successor

Fitness industry leader Paul Byrne will retire September 1 after 28 years with Precor

Woodinville, WA – May 13, 2013 – President Paul Byrne announced today that after 28 years with Precor, including 13 as President, he will begin his retirement on September 1.  Precor Vice President – EMEA & APAC, Rob Barker, will assume the presidency in the culmination of a long-developing succession plan.

When announcing his retirement Byrne shared:

“Over the past 35 years, I have been fortunate to have been part of an industry that has contributed to the well being of so many people, and to have spent 28 of those years at Precor has been beyond fortunate.  It has been an immeasurable gift.  I will retire with great pride in what we have accomplished and with eager anticipation of what lies ahead.”

Byrne, one of the most recognized and respected executives in the fitness industry, began his career as the co-founder of Concept 90, a chain of stores that helped introduce the concept of specialty fitness retail in the United States.  In 1985, Precor founder David Smith invited Byrne to join the then fledgling company as Vice President of Sales and Marketing.  In 2000, Byrne took the helm as president.  Over the course of 28 years Byrne has been a consistent visionary, guiding the transformation of Precor, the fitness industry and the way millions of people exercise.  Under his leadership, Precor:

  • Grew from a $20 million manufacturer of home rowing machines in the United States to a $350 million supplier of home and commercial fitness experiences globally
  • Developed a corporate culture admired for openness and loyalty which is regularly recognized in media surveys of “Best Places to Work”
  • Introduced the Elliptical Fitness Cross-Trainer (EFX®) , establishing what is now the second largest category of cardio equipment found in homes and gyms
  • Introduced the Adaptive Motion Trainer (AMT®), the most personalized piece of cardio training equipment available
  • Established the standard in the newly developing category of networked fitness with Preva®, which now operates in more than 1,000 commercial installations across 37 countries

Upon Byrne’s recommendation, Rob Barker was unanimously approved as the new President by the Amer Sports Board of Directors and Heikki Takala, President & CEO of Amer Sports.  The promotion of Barker continues the legacy of internal leadership development at Precor.  The expectation of a smooth transition and continued success of Precor was emphasized by Byrne:

“Rob has been part of the Precor family since 1995, and I consider him a great colleague and a great friend.  He has done an extraordinary job leading our international business and helping to shape our overall strategy as part of the global senior management team. I am confident in the future of the Precor business and the Precor culture with Rob as our new President.”

Barker joined Precor in 1995 as the U.K. Sales and Marketing Manager and has developed his experience through several positions.  For the last five years Barker served as Vice President – EMEA & APAC and as a member of the global Precor senior management team where he has helped shape the company’s growth strategy.  During his five year tenure at the helm of EMEA & APAC, the Precor business has grown dramatically.  From 2008 through 2012, sales increased 133 percent and now represent 45 percent of all Precor revenue.  Barker will begin his transition now, enjoying several months of overlap with Byrne.  He and his family will relocate to the United States this summer.  In response to the announcement Barker remarked:

“I am honoured and excited to be asked by Paul Byrne and Heikki Takala to become the Precor President upon Paul’s retirement.  I congratulate Paul on his strong career and admire his extraordinary efforts in shaping Precor into the world-leading company that it is today. It has been my good fortune to work closely with Paul for many years and to see first-hand how Precor has, under his stewardship, innovated entirely new categories of fitness equipment and services like the EFX, AMT and Preva. It will be a pleasure to work with our employees worldwide to continue the Precor legacy of innovation.”

Precor operates as the fitness segment of Amer Sports, where the traditional Precor expertise in exercise is complemented by the other brands’ deep understanding of sports and advanced sports equipment.  Heikki Takala, President and CEO of Amer Sports, added:

“I would like to thank Paul for his great contribution to the company as President of Precor.  Paul leaves a huge legacy, with very strong business momentum coupled with a tremendous strategic business transformation from ‘traditional’ fitness company into a ‘networked’ business behind the successful introduction of Preva.  As to Rob Barker’s appointment, I’m really glad that we have been able to internally grow a professional like Rob to assume Paul’s role. Rob’s many years of experience with Precor has given him the skills to succeed in the new position.”

Precor Updates and Expands Discovery™ Series Strength Equipment

Breakthrough Advanced Movement Design™ Pieces Appeal to Beginners yet Perform for Seasoned Athletes

Woodinville, WA and San Diego, CA — IHRSA 2014 (Booth #2538) — March 13, 2014 Precor®, a leading commercial and home fitness equipment manufacturer, today introduced the updated and expanded Discovery™ Series Selectorized Line of strength equipment. Designed to appeal to everyone from novices to a club’s strongest members, the 24-piece Discovery Series Selectorized Line includes four pieces that feature Advanced Movement Design™. Advanced Movement Design is a progressive platform that encourages exercisers to challenge their muscles through a wider range of motion. Through core engagement, stabilization and improved joint range of motion, exercisers build more muscle fibers.

“Our new Advanced Movement Design pieces challenge the body in a way that engages more muscles to functionally develop strength and enhanced movement patterns,” said Pete Borchert, Senior Product Manager at Precor. “Working their muscles in this distinct way, exercisers of all abilities – from first time to advanced users – see better results. This leads to increased exerciser satisfaction, retention and frequency of visits.”

The new Discovery Series Selectorized Line includes six new pieces, four of which feature Advanced Movement Design: Diverging Lat Pulldown, Diverging Low Row, Converging Chest Press and Converging Shoulder Press. The two additional new pieces are Seated Calf Extension and Abdominal.

Exclusive to the Discovery Series Selectorized Line, Advanced Movement Design products help exercisers build upon their strength routine over time with added variety and enhanced core stabilization. Movement arms are angled to match the body’s natural movement patterns. The angled exercises reduce joint impingements and allow full muscle contraction for a greater result. Improved ergonomics include handles for pulling exercises that fit comfortably in an exerciser’s hands. The ellipse-shaped handles allow unrestricted movement that follows a user’s natural range of motion. Each piece provides visual instruction instead of text-based placards and needs little or no adjustments, making it easier for anyone to get started.

The entire Discovery Series is designed to make it simple for novices to get started while delivering experienced exercisers the performance they demand. Color-coded cues, low starting weights and QR code instructional videos ensure a beginner knows what to do when he or she engages a piece of equipment. The sturdy construction and range of resistance ensures athletes stay challenged and don’t outgrow machines.

Preva® by Precor Motivates Exercisers with Curated Music and Entertainment Playlists

‘One Click’ Video On Demand Selections Help Exercisers Focus on their Workouts

Woodinville, WA and San Diego, CA — IHRSA 2014 (Booth #2538) — March 13, 2014 Precor®, a leading commercial and home fitness equipment manufacturer, today announced a significant update to Preva® networked fitness. Available to fitness operators in the U.S., the new version features Video On Demand, a menu of curated music and entertainment content designed to motivate and inspire exercisers. Precor is the first to enable users to select a genre-specific music video type, workout intensity level and 30- or 45-minute time interval, making it easy for exercisers to tune in to entertainment that lasts for the full duration of their workout. By creating playlists from popular YouTube selections, Precor makes it easy for users to quickly find the entertainment they want.

For Anytime Fitness Owner Darren Gillespie, Preva helps distinguish his gym from other fitness facilities in the fiercely competitive downtown Seattle market. “Preva networked fitness is one of the key ways we differentiate from the competition and being able to now offer Video On Demand gives us an even greater edge,” said Gillespie. “It’s a game-changer; there is no easier or better way to connect exercisers with the content they love. It’s a great way to encourage longer, more frequent workouts.”

Also new to the Preva networked fitness platform:

Easier Goal-setting: Exercisers can now set a goal at the same time they create an account. Precor has seen an increase in goal setting by 15 percent with this new personalization feature. Studies have also shown exercisers who use Preva to set goals and track their progress visit the gym more frequently and have greater satisfaction.

Broader Platform Support: Preva Mobile, the companion mobile app that allows exercisers to keep track of their exercise goals from anywhere, is now available in Google Play for Android devices. Preva Mobile enables exercisers to track workouts they complete outside the traditional gym setting, like trail running or hiking, for the most comprehensive log of activities.

Preva On Demand provides a menu of video channels from YouTube, the world’s most popular online video-sharing site. Precor-curated music video playlists include pop, rock, country and a wide variety of other music genres. Users select their favorite genre, workout intensity, and a specific time interval, such as 30 minutes or 45 minutes, and the content automatically covers the duration of their workout.

“If an exerciser has to fumble around looking for interesting content, it takes away from the quality of their workout and can lead them to quit early,” said Dave Flynt, Director, Interaction Design and Development, Precor. “To help users better focus on their workouts, we have created ready-to-go video playlists of popular content that can be discovered easily. Be it rock music videos that accompany their elliptical workout or their favorite tv comedy series, it’s all right in one place that is easy for an in-motion exerciser to discover, select and enjoy.”

Unique to Precor, all Preva music playlists are based on a scientifically proven correlation between music and exerciser performance. In a recent study, exercisers who listened to music required seven percent less oxygen to complete their workout as opposed to those that did not. By offering selections with a performance-improving “beats per minute” rhythm, operators can use music to help alter a person’s perception of his or her own effort throughout a workout.

“Music is a great way to motivate performance during a workout,” added Flynt. “Tapping into a person’s natural inclination to move with the beat of music, we’re able to use videos as a catalyst to help an exerciser achieve better results from their workout – and the session seems to go by more quickly.”

Preva Video On Demand also provides an array of other curated entertainment playlists by content type, such as sports, comedy, movie trailers and news. All music and entertainment content is refreshed regularly to deliver exercisers the greatest selection of current videos.

Preva is the most widely deployed networked fitness solution in the world. Introduced in 2010, Preva is used by more than 1,300 facilities in 56 countries. The inspired connection of people and the technology that empowers their fitness journey, Preva provides exercisers with the tools and experiences to set, reach and exceed their goals. These same technologies also help facility operators better manage their business with solutions that improve equipment utilization, increase retention and drive revenue.

Through a combination of touchscreen equipped fitness equipment, a mobile app and a website all connected via the cloud, Preva helps both operators and exercisers meet their goals. Precor is committed to continually evolving and refining Preva with the industry's only dedicated in-house software Experience Development Center.
