Paul Byrne Announces Retirement as Precor President; Rob Barker Named as Successor

Fitness industry leader Paul Byrne will retire September 1 after 28 years with Precor

Woodinville, WA – May 13, 2013 – President Paul Byrne announced today that after 28 years with Precor, including 13 as President, he will begin his retirement on September 1.  Precor Vice President – EMEA & APAC, Rob Barker, will assume the presidency in the culmination of a long-developing succession plan. 
 
When announcing his retirement Byrne shared:
 
“Over the past 35 years, I have been fortunate to have been part of an industry that has contributed to the well being of so many people, and to have spent 28 of those years at Precor has been beyond fortunate.  It has been an immeasurable gift.  I will retire with great pride in what we have accomplished and with eager anticipation of what lies ahead.”
 
Byrne, one of the most recognized and respected executives in the fitness industry, began his career as the co-founder of Concept 90, a chain of stores that helped introduce the concept of specialty fitness retail in the United States.  In 1985, Precor founder David Smith invited Byrne to join the then fledgling company as Vice President of Sales and Marketing.  In 2000, Byrne took the helm as president.  Over the course of 28 years Byrne has been a consistent visionary, guiding the transformation of Precor, the fitness industry and the way millions of people exercise.  Under his leadership, Precor:
 

  • Grew from a $20 million manufacturer of home rowing machines in the United States to a $350 million supplier of home and commercial fitness experiences globally
  • Developed a corporate culture admired for openness and loyalty which is regularly recognized in media surveys of “Best Places to Work”
  • Introduced the Elliptical Fitness Cross-Trainer (EFX®) , establishing what is now the second largest category of cardio equipment found in homes and gyms
  • Introduced the Adaptive Motion Trainer (AMT®), the most personalized piece of cardio training equipment available
  • Established the standard in the newly developing category of networked fitness with Preva®, which now operates in more than 1,000 commercial installations across 37 countries

 
Upon Byrne’s recommendation, Rob Barker was unanimously approved as the new President by the Amer Sports Board of Directors and Heikki Takala, President & CEO of Amer Sports.  The promotion of Barker continues the legacy of internal leadership development at Precor.  The expectation of a smooth transition and continued success of Precor was emphasized by Byrne:
 
“Rob has been part of the Precor family since 1995, and I consider him a great colleague and a great friend.  He has done an extraordinary job leading our international business and helping to shape our overall strategy as part of the global senior management team. I am confident in the future of the Precor business and the Precor culture with Rob as our new President.”
 
Barker joined Precor in 1995 as the U.K. Sales and Marketing Manager and has developed his experience through several positions.  For the last five years Barker served as Vice President – EMEA & APAC and as a member of the global Precor senior management team where he has helped shape the company’s growth strategy.  During his five year tenure at the helm of EMEA & APAC, the Precor business has grown dramatically.  From 2008 through 2012, sales increased 133 percent and now represent 45 percent of all Precor revenue.  Barker will begin his transition now, enjoying several months of overlap with Byrne.  He and his family will relocate to the United States this summer.  In response to the announcement Barker remarked:
 
“I am honoured and excited to be asked by Paul Byrne and Heikki Takala to become the Precor President upon Paul’s retirement.  I congratulate Paul on his strong career and admire his extraordinary efforts in shaping Precor into the world-leading company that it is today. It has been my good fortune to work closely with Paul for many years and to see first-hand how Precor has, under his stewardship, innovated entirely new categories of fitness equipment and services like the EFX, AMT and Preva. It will be a pleasure to work with our employees worldwide to continue the Precor legacy of innovation.”

Precor Honored for Charitable Contributions at Puget Sound Business Journal Corporate Citizenship Awards Event

Woodinville, WA — May 27, 2014 — Precor®, a leading commercial and home fitness equipment manufacturer, today announced the Puget Sound Business Journal has named it one of the most philanthropic companies in the Puget Sound for its “Precor Cares” and “Precor Gives” charitable giving programs. Precor donated more than $800K in 2013, earning it a second place ranking among 25 medium-sized businesses in the Puget Sound region. The company was honored at the Corporate Citizenship Awards Luncheon May 22 at the Seattle Marriott Waterfront hotel.

“Our Corporate Citizenship event and publication allows us to recognize 75 companies from the Puget Sound region who collectively donated more than $1 billion in cash to charitable causes around the globe, and close to $120 million of that here in Washington,” said Gordon Prouty, publisher of the Puget Sound Business Journal. “We’re pleased to recognize Precor as one of these outstanding organizations for their ongoing generosity and commitment to philanthropy.”

Established in 2006, the “Precor Gives” program empowers company employees to give to the charity of their choice. The company then matches employee contributions dollar for dollar up to $10,000 per employee, per year. Some of the supported charities in 2013 include Susan G. Komen, the American Diabetes Association and Habitat for Humanity, as well as local organizations including local Boys & Girls Clubs, Northwest Harvest, and the Coastal Conservation Association.

Through “Precor Cares,” the company has teamed up with the YMCA of the USA (Y-USA) to award local YMCAs grants that advance the implementation of the Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (HEPA) program. To date, the company’s donations have benefited more than 40 Y communities across the nation.

Step 1: Make sure you are logging into Preva Business Suite
Every few weeks log into PBS to check on your equipment, update messaging, and refresh facility feeds.  You should have received login information via email at the time your order was placed.  Please contact your sales representative if not.

Step 2: Sign your team up for training
On Demand videos and 1:1 webinars are at your disposal to help everyone understand the value of Preva.

Tip - Once your staff is initially trained, schedule periodic training sessions to keep your staff up to speed.

Step 3: Market Preva in your Facility
In club collateral, email templates, and how-to guides are all readily available to you to promote Preva availability. View a list of resources here.

Step 4: Preva Tokens!
Increase adoption and engagement by offering quick access to Preva Tokens.  Exercisers with a token and goals workout on average 4x more often, which brings them into your facility more and increases engagement opportunities.

Step 5: Induction Process
Wrap Preva into all new exerciser orientations and tours, and sign them up with an account and goals. Be sure to include a token in the process.

Tip - The Preva Mobile app is a great way to speed this process up. Staff can help exercisers create an account on the go, and it will be immediately available on the P80 console.

Q: HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR A PREVA ACCOUNT?
A: You can create a Preva account via the display console using the following steps:

  1. Select the "Sign In" button at the bottom of the welcome screen.
  2. Choose "Create Account" from the sign in screen and enter the following information as it appears.
    • Email Address (be sure this is valid in case you lose your password)
    • Password (must be at least 8 characters)
    • Display Name (Name that will appear while signed in to Preva)
    • Date of birth, which determines your age (you must be at least 13 years of age to sign up for a Preva account)
  3. Read the "Terms of Use" page and choose "I Accept" when finished.
  4. You are now automatically signed into your Preva account.

Creating a Web Feed for Preva® Net

A web feed gives users a way to retrieve and read new articles automatically. Feeds are popular with bloggers, news services, and magazine publishers. You can also use a web feed to get the word out about what's happening in your organization and support your business goals in the following ways:

Keep your members satisfied and active by posting members success stories, staff bios and background pages, group exercise schedules, news about special events, nutrition and fitness tips, or a local fitness blog
