Published December 1, 2013, this article in the Industry Observer section of Club Industry discusses how internet connectivity on cardio fitness equipment is increasingly becoming the standard in health clubs. It notes how the demand is coming from both exercisers and operators and quotes Life Fitness, Technogym and Precor Vice President of Networked Fitness Brent Brooks.“As we head into the future, five to 10 years from now, I think this will be the standard,” Brooks says. “It’s no longer the new, neat thing. It’s a requirement.

Precor® and DIRECTV Make Fitness Fun With HDTV-enabled Treadmills

Hospitality and other fitness operators promote facility use and longer workouts by extending 100+ premium quality HD channels to exercisers

Woodinville, WA and Las Vegas, NV — 2014 International CES (South Hall 2 Booth #26923) January 7, 2014 — Precor®, creator of the first cushioned treadmill, today announced DIRECTV-enabled cardio equipment with more than 100 HD channels.

Precor and DIRECTV are enabling fitness operators and hotels to provide exercisers with an expansive number of entertainment options, including their favorite programs in HD, as they work out on cardio equipment, including treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, and Adaptive Motion Trainers® (AMTs®). Precor is the only fitness equipment manufacturer to offer an integrated digital media experience through DIRECTV, bringing CNN, Comedy Central, EPSN, Food Network, HGTV and other HD channels directly to the consoles of exercise equipment.

“Gone are the days of mounting a couple TVs on the wall to serve a dozen different exercisers,” said Brent Brooks, Precor Vice President of Networked Fitness. “Hotels and lodging facilities have found that providing a personal screen with high quality programming is key to increasing fitness facility use and satisfaction. By letting exercisers select from more than 100+ HD channels, operators can help guests reach the end of their workouts faster; no more suffering through limited channel selection and subpar video quality.”

“Consumers can go from the couch to their local fitness facility and enjoy the same great programming and wide selection of HD channels,” said Michael Wittrock, senior vice president of Sales and Distribution, DIRECTV. “Our integration with Precor will completely change both the viewing and exercise experience when they hop on a treadmill or elliptical trainer. Keeping that New Year’s resolution about working out more just got a lot easier.”

Small gym facilities and hospitality-run fitness centers in particular have unique challenges in staying atop the latest entertainment programming trends. One of the top hurdles has been offering personal, high quality entertainment, due to the cost and complication of encrypting TV signals. With the new STB Media Adapter from Precor, hospitality and lodging and other fitness facility owners can quickly and easily extend HD channels to exercisers, promoting longer, more enjoyable and more frequent workouts.

The STB Media Adapter supports a direct HDMI connection to P80 consoles on Precor equipment. Its “plug and play” decryption capabilities enable hospitality operators to offer the same HD programming available in-room, right on cardio equipment screens. This integration delivers exceptional picture quality at a minimal expense and without the need for complicated hardware.

About P80

P80 consoles on Precor Experience Series cardio equipment engage exercisers with personalized experiences. They offer a ‘best in class’ TV experience, helping users easily browse, select or change channels. Machines come complete with workout programming that exercisers can make their own. They can choose from a library of preset workouts designed for specific fitness goals or challenge themselves with the featured workout of the day. Users can customize the information they see on the screen, including which workout statistics are displayed.

The new Precor P80 HDMI connection provides the highest quality and globally consistent delivery mechanism of digital media content. In the Japanese market, the P80 Media Adapter eliminates the need to build a head-end to convert ISDB-T, saving time and resources. U.S. and Japanese operators interested in learning more can contact 1-800-786-8404.

CES 2014 Demo: Experience How Precor® Makes Health and Fitness Personal

Precor reveals innovations in quantified self, personalized entertainment and more

Woodinville, WA and Las Vegas, NV — 2014 International CES (South Hall 2 Booth #26923) — January 7, 2014 — Precor®, the company that revolutionized the cardio equipment market with the versatile Adaptive Motion Trainer® (AMT®), today announced it will show CES attendees how the company’s Preva® networked fitness software combines with Precor exercise equipment to help exercisers achieve their fitness goals through personalized experiences that entertain and motivate. Attendees will learn how Arizona State University (ASU) and countless other exercise facilities are using Preva to promote lifelong healthy habits in consumers.

Across 56 countries, Precor has networked tens of thousands of pieces of cardio equipment using the company’s Preva networked fitness platform. Exercisers have logged more than sixty million individualized workouts to date, including 200,000 personalized workouts a month, while consuming more than five million minutes of media each day.

Visit the Precor booth to learn why Preva is the preferred choice across gyms, non-profit clubs, hotels and other fitness locations to help consumers set, track and reach fitness goals. Exercisers start by setting up a personal account using the touchscreen consoles of any Preva-enabled exercise machine (treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, AMTs, etc.) located throughout the world in nearly 2,000 fitness facilities or via the Preva Mobile app. Upon creating an account, exercisers can set a weekly goal based on the number of workout days and an associated target for calories, distance or duration per workout.

Exercisers can then use the intuitive Preva interface and fitness compass to visually see their progress against predefined goals. Built on the principles of gamification, Preva keeps exercisers motivated with achievement “badges.” Fun and educational, these badges keep users engaged, and progress can be shared on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. Exercisers attain badges such as “Earning your Wings,” rewarded for working out 18 hours in total, the length of Amelia Earhart’s first solo flight from Hawaii to California.

Workouts tracked in Preva can be automatically added into a person’s Microsoft HealthVault record for viewing together with other important health and fitness information. Consumers simply connect their accounts to Microsoft HealthVault, a secure, web-based platform to store and maintain personal health and fitness information in order to build a complete picture of health.

Attendees at CES can also learn how Precor enables exercisers to watch their favorite programs as they work out on cardio equipment, including an integrated digital media experience through DIRECTV, which delivers CNN, Comedy Central, EPSN, Food Network, HGTV and other HD channels directly to exercisers on the consoles of exercise equipment.

Take a test drive of Preva during exhibit hours at CES in South Hall 2 Booth #26923.

Precor® Makes it Easy for Microsoft HealthVault Users to Track Fitness Activity In the Gym, At Home and Everywhere In Between

Consumers use Preva to track fitness activity as part of their complete picture of health

Woodinville, WA and Las Vegas, NV — 2014 International CES (South Hall 2 Booth #26923) — January 7, 2014 — Precor®, the company that introduced the world to the elliptical fitness crosstrainer and other breakthrough exercise offerings, today announced workouts tracked in Preva® can be automatically added into a person’s Microsoft HealthVault record for viewing together with other important health and wellness information. Exercisers start by setting up a personal account using the touchscreen consoles of any Preva-enabled exercise machine (treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, etc.) located throughout the world in nearly 2,000 fitness facilities. After tracking completed workouts against goals on machines or via the Preva Mobile app, consumers connect their accounts to Microsoft HealthVault, a secure, web-based platform to store and maintain personal health and fitness information, to build a complete picture of health.

“The goal of HealthVault is to help every individual create a full picture of their overall health and wellbeing, and then use that information with tools and services that improve their lives,” said Sean Nolan, Distinguished Engineer, Microsoft HealthVault. “Preva is a fantastic example of both of these --they make it super-simple to track workouts in the gym or via their mobile app, and they provide motivation to exercisers through a unique rewards system that reminds them that their hard work is paying off. We’re thrilled to have Precor as the first fitness equipment partner in our growing ecosystem.”

Microsoft HealthVault is a trusted place for people to gather, store, use and share health information online. With Microsoft HealthVault, the company’s Preva solution joins a powerful ecosystem of connected apps and devices that help individuals create and use informative health and wellness records for themselves and their families.

Preva is the preferred choice across gyms, non-profit clubs, hotels, universities and more for helping consumers set, track and reach fitness goals. Upon creating an account on Preva-enabled exercise equipment (880 Line) or via the Preva Mobile app, exercisers set a weekly objective for number of workout days and an associated goal for calories, distance or duration. Each time a consumer completes a workout in the gym or outside, the activity is logged into the user’s account. Microsoft HealthVault users can now add this same information to their wellness record online.

“Consumers are their own best advocates when it comes to managing their own personal or family health,” said Brent Brooks, Precor Vice President of Networked Fitness. “Microsoft HealthVault is the place to create a complete picture of your health with you at the center. We’re excited to tie so seamlessly into this platform, providing a transparent experience to consumers so that they can make goals, monitor progress and be inspired along the way.”

Built on the principles of gamification, Preva keeps exercisers motivated with badge achievements. Fun and educational, these badges keep users engaged with their fitness goals, and milestones can be shared on leading social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. Users gain badges such as “Golden Gate,” rewarded for burning 232 calories, the average equivalent of walking from one side of the Golden Gate Bridge to the other. The system’s intuitive interface and fitness compass makes it easy for users to visually see their progress against predefined goals.

“We already know that exercisers that set goals with Preva are proven to work out on average one day more per week in an exercise facility than those that don’t,” added Brooks. “We’re excited to reach more consumers through this partnership and offer the inspiration they need to tackle the wellness goals they set for themselves.”

Microsoft HealthVault gives consumers one place to access all of their health information online. Users add information and connect with data from health care providers. Connected apps help consumers put more into and get more out of HealthVault. Users can also choose to upload data directly from personal health devices, such as blood pressure monitors and pedometers. Consumers can choose to share parts of their health record with anyone, whenever they want.

ASU Eyes ‘Healthiest University’ in U.S. Status, Installs Precor® Preva

Friendly inter-campus competitions aim to improve student, staff and faculty health and wellness

Woodinville, WA and Las Vegas, NV — 2014 International CES (South Hall 2 Booth #26923) — January 7, 2014 — Precor®, top provider of exercise equipment to university fitness centers since 1989, today announced that Arizona State University (ASU) has installed Preva® networked fitness as part of its effort to create a healthier campus. Preva provides the quantified self services students, staff and faculty need to set, monitor and achieve fitness goals across ASU’s Downtown Phoenix, Polytechnic, Tempe and West Sun Devil Fitness Complexes (SDFC). Users create their personal accounts on any of the facilities’ Preva-enabled cardio equipment and/or the free Preva Mobile app, where they gain a helpful and motivating companion for their journey toward better health. With nearly 300 pieces of networked equipment, ASU is the largest networked fitness installation in the world.

“Quality of life on campus is dependent on having the right health and fitness resources available,” said Tamra Garstka, Director of Sun Devil Fitness, Tempe. “Equipment variety in our gyms is just part of the picture, whereas Preva networked fitness offers a personalized fitness experience students of all wellness levels need to succeed for the long term. Each student who walks through the Sun Devil Fitness Complex doors has essentially their own ‘personal trainer’ keeping them on track toward their fitness goals.”

ASU is the largest public university in the U.S., with a current undergraduate and graduate enrollment of more than 76,000. More than 12,500 staff and faculty members are employed across all campus locations. With a focus on improving the health and fitness of its population and becoming the healthiest university in the U.S., ASU has enhanced the quality of the fitness offerings available to students. This includes facility expansions and purchasing nearly 300 pieces of Precor P80 cardio equipment, such as treadmills, ellipticals, recumbent and upright bikes and Adaptive Motion Trainers® (AMT®). Preva networked fitness was installed to enable fitness program personalization and to unite exercisers across disparate campuses into one health-minded community. Since the re-launch, facilities have experienced a 15-20 percent increase in traffic.

Kicking off its newly updated fitness centers, ASU asked students across the four campuses to take the “Cardio Challenge,” which lasted two months. Students participated by creating their own personal Preva account where they could begin logging their workouts. Students also were encouraged to download the Preva Mobile app, allowing them to enter workouts completed outside the gym into their log. Every student (up to 1,000) who logged 500 minutes, received a free performance shirt. The individual with the most minutes at each of the four facilities also won an iPod. The challenge was promoted in partnership with the Well Devils organization, a group of campus volunteers who promote a well mind, body, and community at ASU.

By late October 2013, there were a combined nearly 3,000 Preva account holders across all four campuses, accounting for 1,905,600 minutes or 31,760 hours of workouts recorded. Preva has also been named the official fitness tracking app of the Pac-12 Fitness Challenge being held in February 2014, which ASU competes in every year.

“Preva is a powerful way to connect multiple fitness centers together for a consistent user experience and greater sense of community,” said Brent Brooks, Precor Vice President of Networked Fitness. “ASU is a shining example of how networked fitness can be used to promote better fitness through personalization and friendly competitions. This is an exciting development for organizations wanting to drive better health across large populations made up of all ages, fitness levels and across many physical locations.”

As part of ASU’s recently enhanced wellness initiative, the university also is encouraging students, staff and faculty to sign up for Microsoft HealthVault, a place for people to gather, store, use and share health information online. An integration between Preva and HealthVault ensures workouts logged with Preva can be automatically added to a person’s HealthVault record.

Preva, the largest networked fitness platform of its type in the world, is deployed in nearly 2,000 fitness facilities in more than 50 countries across the globe. The preferred choice for networked fitness across gyms, YMCAs and other non-profits, hotels, universities and more, Preva brings fitness facilities highly personalized tools and experiences that empower the quantified self.

Preva also helps facility operators better manage their business by gathering and presenting equipment and facility usage data. Its communication tools, including in-workout messaging and RSS feeds, enable facility managers to reach exercisers in ways that inform, educate and increase revenue.
