Meet the Precor Master Coaches: Jeff Groh

My name is Jeff Groh and I was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. I moved to San Diego after graduating from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science in 1999. I’m an ACE Master Trainer and an international fitness presenter who works with the Total Gym Gravity Program at the Mission Valley YMCA.

Precor has more than 50 Master Coaches in 20 countries around the world. These Master Coaches deliver workshops on Precor equipment, develop curriculum for new onsite training courses, contribute to our blogs, and provide premier coaching at tradeshows and events. What got you into fitness?

I am fascinated by the complexity and grace of human movement. I grew up with guys who loved to “lift” and I quickly realized that, although they had huge chests and arms, they didn’t seem to “move” very well. This is what most likely drove me away from gyms and into the wild. My focus after college has remained a movement-based training approach versus a muscle-based training approach.

How many years have you been involved in the fitness industry?

Sixteen years.

What fitness certifications do you hold?

ACSM: Certified Exercise Physiologist ACE: Advanced Health & Fitness Specialist

Why did you want to be a Precor Master Coach?

I was interested in the opportunity to partner with a leading edge, global education provider seeking to enhance our understanding of human movement.

What is your favorite piece of Precor equipment and why?

The AMT! I believe in variation and the AMT passes with flying colors. The AMT offers a wide variety of multi-dimensional movements along with simple tweaks to challenge tempo, intensity and overall metabolic demand.

What is your favorite move to do on Queenax equipment?

I like monkey bar variations. However, the 4DPro may be a game changer!

Tell us about your favorite fitness memory when you were able to help a client reach and/or exceed his or her fitness goals.

My favorite “ongoing” memory was/is working with a 75-year old client who had become extremely discouraged after ongoing bilateral knee pain and messages from his physician to “slow down” because dancing and gardening were destroying his knees. Within one year of corrective type exercise and functional movement patterns focusing on his feet, ankles, hips and posture, he was pain free. Today at age 81, he hops, skips and jumps and was recently asked to discuss and demonstrate his training regimen with a group of amazed physicians!

What’s your favorite fitness mantra?

"Move it or lose it!"

What’s your favorite movie (fitness-related or not)?

Caddyshack, Animal House, Anchorman, Airplane, The Jerk, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Knocked Up, Stripes, Blazing Saddles, Vacation … how do you decide?

Give us a random fun fact about yourself!

I have family scattered all over the U.S. and all 50+ of us get together every year for ridiculous levels of lakefront fun for an entire week.
