What It Takes to Build a Breakthrough Fitness Business

The fitness industry has grown and is, as a whole, an inspiring and breakthrough industry.

Before you can create a truly successful breakthrough company of your own, you must know who you are as a business. Define what you stand for and what your business is about. If you do not know who you are, neither will your clients.

The following is a summarization of an education session from the 2015 IHRSA Convention, produced with full permission from IHRSA. The full-length video is available for purchase at ihrsastore.com.

Building a Breakthrough Business

Understand What Makes a Breakthrough Business

The most impactful leaders connect with clients, which means that, in order to be successful, you must be proactive. By anticipating your clients’ needs, you will be able to create an outstanding customer experience, brand, and business that break through the competition. It's critical that your business is well defined.

Keep in mind that you are writing your own story and your business is your responsibility. You can take it in any direction you like, but there are best practices that can help set you on a path to success. A good strategy for building an innovative business begins with the end goal. Trace this concept to the beginning by articulating and documenting each step required to arrive at your chosen final destination and the ultimate vision for your business. It is easier to start with a solid idea of what your final business should look like and work backward to make it happen than it is to plan a course without a clear destination.

Along with a defined plan, your leadership style will play a significant role in the ultimate success of your business. Practice conscious leadership by demonstrating competence, character, and compassion. Let your actions demonstrate your commitment and competence. Be consistent with your efforts and ensure that your employees know and adhere to what is expected of them.

Consistently delivering an excellent member experience and high level of service builds a loyal customer base. Invest the time and energy required to understand the dynamics of your particular community and market so you can anticipate their needs and wants. Study the demographics of your prospective members and offer services that are priced appropriately.

Connecting the Dots

Your revenue, profits, and market are obviously important business elements, and they each stem from a carefully made plan and a deep understanding of your members. Starting a business is exciting – possibly the most exciting event in your life so far – but taking the time to develop a strategy rather than rushing into things will pay off. Ultimately, you are the catalyst for your business, the one who must make things happen, and the leader who can get things done.
