The University of Westminster and Precor: A Gym Built to Last
At the University of Westminster, student wellbeing is a priority. With fitness playing an increasingly important role in university life, the Regent Street campus gym needs to reflect modern expectations, offering an inclusive, engaging, and high-quality training environment.
Free to all students and staff, the gym needs to be welcoming, accessible, and intuitive for everyone. “We’ve made it accessible by making sure that the gym is free for all students and staff, so it’s really important that we make it welcoming and user-friendly for everyone,” Sam Lawrence, Business & Sports Manager explains.
Having partnered with Precor for more than 20 years, the University knows the importance of investing in equipment that is not only modern and visually appealing, but also durable enough to handle heavy daily use from more than 3,000 members each year.
A Longstanding Partnership Built on Trust
The Regent Street gym has evolved significantly over the past two decades, from a basic training space into a modern fitness environment. Throughout this journey, Precor equipment has remained a constant, adapting alongside changing student expectations and fitness trends to support a wide range of training styles.
Some machines have stayed in use for over two decades, highlighting the exceptional durability and relevance, Sam said, “some of the kit we’ve had for over 20 years… lasting the test of time.”
The refurbishment presented an opportunity to modernise the look and feel of the gym, while retaining the robustness required for a high-traffic university environment. Fitness spaces today need to be inspiring and reflective of current industry trends.
Equipment That Delivers Variety and Impact
The refurbished gym introduces a vibrant new look alongside a varied mix of equipment designed to appeal to all demographics. New additions – including the Glutebuilder® Hip Thrust Elite and Pendulum Kickback machines, three StairClimbers and two Resolute™ Dual Adjustable Pulleys – have been well received, bringing something fresh and different, while remaining user-friendly and accessible. “The feedback has been absolutely fantastic… they’re user- friendly and completely different to what we’ve had in the past,” says Sam.
Collaborative Design in a Challenging Space
Designing the new gym was a highly collaborative process. With the facility located in a basement, space was limited and every square metre needed to be used effectively. Working closely with Precor’s design team, different layouts were explored to maximise flow, usability, and variety.
Precor’s team remained fully engaged throughout the installation process, providing reassurance and expertise at every stage. “You never felt like you were left alone with it,” Sam adds. The result is a gym that feels open, efficient, and purpose-built, despite spatial constraints.
With members praising both the new equipment and the overall feel of the space, the refreshed gym delivers excitement and aesthetic impact, whilst meeting the demanding durability requirements of a busy university facility.
